Individually, condoms usually cost a dollar or more. Condoms are also effective barriers against other diseases such as herpes simplex, hepatitis B, chlamydia and gonorrhea.

They also prevent pregnancy, although not as effectively. Condoms are effective because they block contact with body fluids that cause sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy. Most reports of condom failure are the result of inconsistent or incorrect use, not breakage.

Condoms are most effective when they are used in combination with another method of contraception, such as the pill or foam . Condoms are not being used as much as they need to be because of negative perceptions about condoms by users and potential users, by cultural and community leaders, by health-care providers and by policy-makers. Condoms are not 100 percent safe, but if used properly, will reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS. If you have unprotected sex now, you can contract sexually transmitted diseases.
