The man generally credited with the use of the term Web 2.0, Tim O’Reilly, said that Web 2.0 was “the business revolution in the computer industry…” This revolution is rapidly advancing the technological capabilities of today as well as closing the physical gap between people who would otherwise be across the globe. Web 2.0 is a term that is used to refer to the use of the internet with a creative outlook in order to create blogs, wikis, social networking sites and a variety of other popular WebPages. YouTube, Facebook and Myspace, these video sharing and social networking sites have become near household terms in their popularity and are all examples of Web 2.0. Interestingly enough these sites have a large social impact, social networking sites allow people, friends and co-workers even, to communicate from across the globe at all times. Video sharing sites and blogs have let people keep others up to date, show their work, and express themselves in a free and instantaneous manner. Web 2.0 is not a technological advance in the web itself, just a development of how the technology being used. It is more of a change in the creative processes behind the creation of a web page and the purpose behind its creation. This has, as briefly mentioned earlier, created what Don Tapscott and Anthony T. Williams, the authors of Wikinomics: How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything refer to as “the new web”, which is dependent on “mass collaboration.” The widespread application of Web 2.0 hinges on the fact that a mass of people have like minded goals to draw from a site. This way the site increases in popularity and becomes better known, attracting more people who then are essentially collaborating and reinforcing the site’s following. Through mass collaboration social networking sites, wikis, blogs and other Web 2.0 creations bring people together and help form social bonds through the sites. This is in effect the revolution Tim O’Reilly was referring to and is creating stronger social bonds that span the world through mass collaboration.
