In the early days of online gaming, dialup BBS (bulletin board systems) were the popular format. It was back in the 1980s when this relatively new communication platform was being used used for online gaming. The types of games being played on the BBS included popular favourites such as blackjack, chess, and other types of games which were heavily based on fantasy settings, using rules similar to those many would instantly associate with the legendary Dungeons & Dragons series.

During the 1990s, online games began moving away from LAN protocols (which was the basis of the bulletin board system) and they actually began featuring on websites using TCP/IP protocols. What this meant is that games could feature and be played once a webpage had been opened.

Remember Doom? Well, this ground breaking release popularized the concept of death-match style online games, where multiple players (from different locations) would do battle with each other head-to-head. Since the introduction of Doom, nearly all first-person shooter games released will now contain some for of online perfomance to allow death-match or arena style play. Throughout the last decade, online gaming really has successfully taken off since the launch of the first MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game), a term that was coined by Richard Garriott, the creator of Ultima Online. The concept of MMORPG games mostly involves gamers playing the role of a fictional character living in a cyberworld where they can interact with one another to complete the objectives. Players usually find that by forming teams to take on bosses, or even creating alliances to go to war with other tribes, that they will be more successful in the game. You will find that the majority of MMORPGs have a monthly subscription which is used to provide maintenance for the games servers and to help fund staff for support purposes.

It is commonly agreed that the success of Ultima Online has come about thanks to the implementation of an online multiplayer system into all of their games. This demands a reasonably high level of ability since you're (more often than not) playing against another human player, which undoubtedly makes the game more competitive and interesting than if you were to be playing artificial intelligence.

Today there are literally hundreds of other MMORPGs which all appeared following the success of Ultima Online. Two of the best examples would be Everquest and Runescape. Most online games released today will have the multiplayer features as people continuously look for new ways to exploit the community element of the internet.
